Most units obtain their own tax ID number by completing IRS Form SS-4. The current form and instructions are available on the IRS website. The chartered organization should be the “responsible party.” Contact your chartered organization for written permission. Contact your local council for more information. The Ship is not tax-exempt, and should not indicate tax-exempt on the SS-4. It should indicate that the EIN is for banking purposes only.
